Innovative Strategy & Commentary for #5 - Health Education Lesson Plan Assignment Progression & Commentary

In this section, I illustrate the intentional learning strategy pathway embedded in my GCH 350 course and demonstrate how three assignment prompts and targeted feedback guide students’ progress toward the final Health Education Lesson Plan assignment.

With permission, I highlight the work of two students, Suzi and Mina, who were enrolled in my Fall 2025 GCH 350-DL2 course and paired during week 1 based on their CliftonStrengths assessment results.  Their progression across group assignments provides a clear example of how structured feedback supports skill development, decision-making, and continuous improvement throughout the semester.

Week 8 Assignment

This assignment represents the first group-based learning experience in the course. Student pairs, established in the first week of our course using the CliftonStrengths assignment, apply Health Literacy and Media Literacy concepts from our course lectures to create a 30-second PSA, a creative brochure, or another health education material aligned with the lesson plan topic and identified target audience they have chosen together.

Feedback on this assignment is intentionally exploratory and formative.  Rather than focusing solely on the final product, I provide feedback that prompts students to reflect on message clarity and audience appropriateness.  This feedback is designed to help students refine and ultimately commit to a health education topic and target population that will serve as the foundation for their final Health Education Lesson Plan.

Week 9 Assignment

Building directly on decisions made in their week 8 assignment, student pairs apply the Writing Educational Objective lecture material to develop three educational objectives: one cognitive, one affective, and one psychomotor, that correspond with an activity they will highlight in their final Health Education Lesson Plan assignment.

Feedback at this stage is more directive and skill specific. I focus on students’ application of SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Timely) criteria, offering concrete suggestions for revision. This feedback helps students strengthen their objectives so they can be seamlessly integrated into their final Health Education Lesson Plan assignment.

Week 11 Assignment

In this third group assignment, students apply Instructional Strategies and Teaching Skill Development content to complete their Health Education Lesson Plan Section III Template and their Health Education Evaluation Plan Section IV Template.

Feedback at this stage emphasizes alignment between objectives, instructional strategies, and evaluation methods.  Comments are designed to help students refine organization, instructional flow, and assessment strategies, ensuring these components are cohesive and ready for inclusion in their final Health Education Lesson Plan assignment.

Week 12 Assignment

The final group assignment requires students to submit their completed Health Education Lesson Plan.  This submission demonstrates how Suzi and Mina incorporated and responded to feedback provided during weeks, 8, 9 and 11.

Feedback on their final Health Education Lesson Plan is summative and reflective, highlighting students’ growth across the semester while reinforcing strengths in planning, instructional design, and audience center health education.  In addition, I provide forward looking feedback to support students as they transition to the final individual assignment in the course, their Health Education Presentation assignment.
